Description
Bandelier National Monument is United States National Monument in New Mexico preserving the homes and territory of the Ancestral Puebloans Native Americans in the Southwest. Hiking the Main Loop Trail in Frijoles Canyon you come upon the cliffs in which the ancestral Pueblo people lived.
This image shows a cavate, or carved room, which the Ancient Puebloans created behind the rooms they built at the bottom of cliffs. They would carve these rooms using stone tools and would often plaster the room and smoke the ceiling to make it less crumbly. Sometimes they would paint or carve pictographs or petroglyphs into the walls.
