Artist's Description

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, also called the C&O Canal, operated from 1831 until 1924. It ran parallel to the Potomac River in Maryland, from Cumberland, Maryland, to Washington, D.C. The total length of the canal is about 185 miles. A lock is a device for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The locks make a river more easily navigable, or allow a canal to take a more direct line across land that is not level. The C&O canal is now maintained by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, with a trail following the old towpath. This picture was taken from the canal towpath near Great Falls, Maryland, early one beautiful autumn morning.

Being alone in a new city, I would take my camera wherever I went, and I was soon making my own prints in...
