Description
I've lived in Washington DC since 1979. I went to the see National Christmas Tree my first winter here, and hadn't gone back until this past Christmas time -- the winter of 2019. I have to confess that the tree and display wasn't nearly as nice as I remember from that first visit long ago. Maybe I have just romanticized it over the years because I was much younger, and moving to Washington was a very exciting time in my life. In any event, although this last visit was very different, it was still lovely and greatly enhanced by a beautiful sunset sky.
Every year since 1923, a large evergreen tree is brought to Washington, and erected and decorated at The Ellipse, which is next to the White House. It is then traditionally lit by the President. It is surrounded by a display of running model trains and has a broader outer walkway with small decorated trees from each of the 50 states.
