Description
The refectory in the Alcobaca Monastery in Portugal. The Monastery is a Roman Catholic complex located in the town of Alcobaca, in central Portugal. It was established in 1153 by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, and was the first Gothic building in Portugal. The refectory was the room where the monks had their meals. While they ate, one of the monks would read the Bible aloud from a pulpit that is embedded on the wall in the left of this photo. It protrudes from the wall next to the series of arches that house stairs leading up to it. Because of its artistic, cultural and historical importance, the Monastery was included in UNESCO's World Heritage Site list in 1989.
