It's a little touristy, but riding a camel in the Erg Chebbi sand dunes in Morocco is an unforgettable experience. Getting off the camel and taking pictures of a line of them being led by a local Berber was even better.
Erg Chebbi one of Morocco's several large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. While the ergs are within an area of semi-arid Pre-Saharan Steppes, and not technically part of the Sahara desert which lies some distance to the south, it sure looked like how I had always imagined the Sahara Desert would look. Adding camels to the scene made it just about perfect.
