Description
Some varieties of agave plants in the southwest desert can live for many years before flowering once. They flower by putting out giant stalks that go reach upward from 8 to 18 feet tall. The stalks then sprout out tentacle like branches that contain its saucer shaped flowers and seed pods. After blooming, the agave begins to die and the stalk falls to the ground. That is what is happening with the agave plant in this picture. I photographed it at sunrise near the Schnebly Hill trail in Sedona, Arizona.
