Description
During the Devonian period of the Paleozoic Era, about 380 million years ago, the Sahara Desert in Morocco wasn't a desert and was, in fact, underwater. Fish, plants and other ancient marine animals thrived until climate conditions changed and that ocean ultimately became desert and mountains. Fossil remains of this prehistoric life were preserved in marble and limestone rocks, and some towns in that region of Morocco, like Erfoud, have factories that turn the fossilized rocks into beautiful pieces of decorative art and furniture. This image shows a small portion of a large slab of fossils embedded in polished marble and is awaiting further work.
