Description
A view of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, framed through an archway just off the mosque's main square.
The mosque is the largest in Africa, and the 5th largest in the world. Following the death of King Mohammed V in 1961, King Hassan II requested the country's best artisans to submit plans for a mausoleum honoring the departed king. Construction of the mosque began in 1986 and was completed in 1993. Its minaret is the tallest in the world and the mosque can accommodate 105,000 worshippers, 25,000 inside and another 80,000 on the vast outside square.
