Description
A popular day trip when visiting the Isle of Mull, one of the Inner Hebrides Islands of Scotland, is to take a ferry to another, smaller, isle -- Staffa, which means pillar or pillar island. The island was formed by volcanic activity and is made of hexagonal basalt columns that look like pillars, the details of which are shown here. It remains uninhabited, but is a nesting site for various seabirds in the spring and summer. It is probably most famous for Fingal’s Cave, where the columns are intricately curved and distorted, but the entrance to the cave was closed when I visited. It was still a great place to visit!
