Description
Wall art and graffiti on the Lennon Wall in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, or Czechia. Once a normal wall, the Lennon Wall, or John Lennon Wall, has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles' songs since the 1980's.
In opposition to the totalitarian communist government, young Czechs wrote grievances on the wall and started a movement that was ironically described as "Lennonism." Czech authorities tried to suppress this movement by painting over the wall, but activists and artists would return each night, risking arrest, to paint new messages of peace, love, and anti-government themes.
The wall continuously undergoes change and the original portrait of John Lennon is long lost under layers of new paint, and today, the wall continues to represent a symbol of global ideals such as love and peace.
