Description
The Monument to the Discoveries, in the Belem section of Lisbon, Portugal, is a seven-story monument honoring the courage and bravery of the Portuguese navigators who crossed the world and discovered new lands. The monument includes an elevator that takes you up to a rooftop observation deck, affording beautiful views of the city and the Tagus River. Looking down from the deck to the foot of the Monument, you can see amazing tile work depicting a giant wind rose with a map of the world in the center. The map shows the dates of the important Portuguese discoveries and ships mark the places where Portuguese explorers set foot on new lands. If you look carefully at the photo, you can see people and shadows walking across the map, giving you a sense of the scale of this amazing work.
