Description
Library patrons, reference books, paladin windows, chandeliers, and reflectionsl in the Rose Main Reading Room of the New York Public Library, in New York City. Officially, the building is The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, but it is commonly known as the Main Branch or the just the New York Public Library, and it is the flagship building in the New York Public Library system and a landmark in Midtown Manhattan.
The Beaux-Arts style building opened on May 23, 1911, and the Rose Main Reading Room is located on the third floor. The room is roughly the length of two city blocks, with a 52-foot-high ceiling, nearly as large as the Grand Central Terminal's Main Concourse. It was originally described as being in the Renaissance architectural style, but is now considered to be a Beaux-Arts design. The Main Reading Room was renovated and renamed for the Rose family in 1998–1999, and further renovations to its ceiling were completed in 2016. The room became a New York City designated landmark in 2017.
