Description
A paper lantern in front of the Calf restaurant in the Gion district of Kyoto, Japan. Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, and is filled with shops, restaurants and teahouses (ochaya), where geiko, a geisha in Kyoto dialect, and maiko, or geiko apprentice entertain. There, you often see paper lanterns hanging in front of an Izakaya which is Japanese-style bar or ramen restaurant. These traditional lanterns are called chouchin. ‘Chou’ means to hang, and ‘chin’ means light.
