Description
I was on the seventh day of a twelve-day trip to the Scottish Highlands and Inner Hebrides Islands and I had yet to see any highland cattle, something I had thought of an icon of Scotland. Driving along a rural road on the Isle of Skye on a very rainy day, I saw some highland cattle in a pasture right next to the road. Despite the rain, I got out my camera, covered it to protect it from the weather and took a few quick shots of the cattle, including this one of a wet cow, seemingly oblivious to the weather. This quick photo shoot confirmed two things that I had suspected. I very much dislike photography in the rain, and highland cattle don't seem to mind the rain at all.
Often called hairy coos, the highland cattle breed has a heritage stretching back to the days of the clans. They originated in the Highlands and Outer Hebrides islands and are mainly raised for beef. Their distinguishing features are their long horns and long, wavy, woolly coats.
