Description
Driving through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, from Fes south to the Sahara Desert, my guide knew an area where Barbary Macaques were known to frequent. Sure enough, we spotted a group by the side of road next to a solitary vendor who sold small souvenirs and some snacks, including peanuts which, of course, people were buying and tossing to the macaques. Whether the macaques stayed by this area because of the vendor, or the vendor stayed in the area because of the macaques is a chicken and egg question for which I have no answer. I was just glad they were there so I could get some photos, like this action shot of two young macaques playing, or perhaps fighting.
The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus), also known as the Barbary ape or magot, is a macaque species that is unique for its distribution outside Asia, and can be found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco, where I saw this one.
