Artist's Description

A portion of a vintage Uneeda Biscuit sign painted on an outside brick wall in Roanoke, Virginia.

The National Biscuit Company began in 1898 with the merger of various bakeries throughout the country, and it started marking all of its merchandise with the emblem of an oval topped by a cross with two bars. The Company also decided to introduce a new line of biscuits, and chose the ordinary soda cracker, but gave it an unusual octagonal shape and packaged it in a special protective container, its patented "In-er-Seal" waxed paper lining to retain freshness. It named the product The Uneeda Biscuit, and it was the National Biscuit Company's first packaged cracker.

After many years, the National Biscuit Company changed its name to Nabisco and eventually discontinued the Uneeda Biscuit in 2009, after over 110 years, over concerns that the product was not sufficiently profitable.

Photography moved to the back burner during high school, college, and law school, but I picked it up again after I graduated law school in 1979, moved to Washington DC, and began my legal career with the federal government. Being alone in a new city, I would take my camera wherever I went, and I was soon making my own prints in...
