Waves rush around small, crystal-looking icebergs on a cloudy sunrise at Jokulsarlon beach in southern Iceland, where icebergs of varying size and shape are washed ashore, having floated into the sea from the nearby glacial lagoon.
I guess I've had an off-and-on love affair with photography my whole life. My father was always taking pictures and movies when I was a kid growing up on Long Island, NY in the 1950s-60s, and he gave me my own Kodak Brownie camera when I was around 6 years old. I remember using it to take pictures of family events and a trip to Washington DC, back in 1958. I still have some of the pictures ....... somewhere. Photography moved to the back burner during high school, college, and law school, but I picked it up again after I graduated law school in 1979, moved to Washington DC, and began my legal career with the federal government. Stuart, what you have captured is, in a word, "Clarity". You have characterized your subjects as "crystal-like". Fair enough, but when my eye falls upon these structures, the word that comes to mind is "gem-like". The clarity on display, a testament to the purity of the water, frozen however long ago, as well as the clarity of the light, caught and distributed by the facet-like structures of these icebergs, is awe inspiring. My eye tells me these are diamonds that should be on display in some posh museum, but I must take you at your word that they are actually structures of solid water. Composition, exposure and the softening of the waves all come together to make an amazing and thought provoking image...nicely done!
