Description
Leather hides that were hand stained yellow laying out to dry in the early morning sun at a leather tannery in the medina, or old town, of Fes (Fez), Morocco.
At the tannery, goat, sheep, cow, and camel hides are soaked in vats of various solutions, some to soften the hides and others to dye them colors made from natural ingredients. Some colors, like the yellow here, are applied by hand. The production of leather goods at the tannery is done with all manual labor and without modern equipment, and the methods have remained unchanged since medieval times.
