My sunrise shoot in Ourem, Portugal, started with just dark clouds overhead. Then, some clearing in the east allowed the sun to shine through and light the clouds in the distance with beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red. A layer of fog in the valley below just added to a magical scene.
Ourem, a small medieval town in Portugal which sits atop a hill and offers beautiful views of the valley, is mostly visited for its ruined castle and palace, which date back to the Moorish occupation that began in the eighth century.
I guess I've had an off-and-on love affair with photography my whole life. My father was always taking pictures and movies when I was a kid growing up on Long Island, NY in the 1950s-60s, and he gave me my own Kodak Brownie camera when I was around 6 years old. I remember using it to take pictures of family events and a trip to Washington DC, back in 1958. I still have some of the pictures ....... somewhere. Photography moved to the back burner during high school, college, and law school, but I picked it up again after I graduated law school in 1979, moved to Washington DC, and began my legal career with the federal government.
