Description
A visit to Japan in winter took me to the Kushiro marshlands on the island of Hokkaido to photograph Japanese Red-crowned Cranes. These cranes, also called Manchurian cranes or Japanese cranes, are large East Asian cranes and are among the rarest cranes in the world. In some parts of its range, they are known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity. Snow was falling when this flock of cranes took off together from the field where they are grazing and preening, and they flew away from me towards a nearby forest.
