Description
A closeup of one sunflower in a field at the McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Poolesville, Maryland. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Heritage Service plants sunflowers each spring at McKee-Beshers, and they mainly bloom in July.
The fields are about an hour drive from my home in downtown Washington, DC, and it seemed like a perfect rural escape during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic on a weekday during the sunflowers' blooming period. I got there in the early afternoon, knowing that the weather report called for some severe afternoon thunderstorms. I didn't know, however, that the storms would start only 15 minutes after I got to the field. While I was disappointed that I didn't have more time to explore and photograph the sunflower fields, I was delighted with the dramatic storm sky in the pictures I took during my too brief time there.
