Description
One of the highlights of my trip to Morocco was a visit to Erg Chebbi -- one of Morocco's several large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. While the ergs are within an area of semi-arid Pre-Saharan Steppes, and not technically part of the Sahara desert which lies some distance to the south, it sure looked like how I had always imagined the Sahara Desert would look.
After arriving on a rainy afternoon, yes rain in the desert, I got up early the next morning and hiked a short distance into the dunes from my hotel. There were still storm clouds in the sky, and parts of the dunes were still wet, but I think it helped give a different dramatic look to the landscape. Getting up early also meant that there were few, if any, footprints or tire tracks on the dunes, which certainly isn't the case later in the day.
