My usual travel photography was put on hold during the coronavirus epidemic of 2020. I used this time at home to learn about aspects of photography that I have ignored for too long. One topic was flash photography, including using flash to enhance outdoor subjects.
Fortunately, I didn't have to travel to experiment with the new techniques. Someone planted some sunflowers along a busy street with apartment buildings near my home in downtown Washington, DC. It was a very cloudy morning and a storm was moving in. I had learned how to enhance the sky by changing my white balance setting but then to correct the white balance for a close subject matter by putting a color correcting gel on my flash. I crouched low and shot up at this tall sunflower, getting the nearby apartment and overcast sky in the background. Hope you like it!
